Marine Fact of the Week

Marine Fact of the Week

For this week’s #marinefactoftheweek we present a rare and interesting species that is only sometimes spotted around Victoria and other parts of B.C..

These are two brown pelicans, and they are not very common in northern areas of the Salish Sea. However, we have had multiple sightings over several years of these birds. British Columbia is about the northernmost extent that these birds are usually seen, usually having migrated after breeding from the Gulf of California, Mexico.

The wingspan of this bird is impressive- reaching up to 6.5 feet wide!
