Happy World Orca Day!
Did you know?
Orcas are found in every ocean in the world (NOAA), but this does not mean that all orcas have the same social structure, diet, communication style or hunting behaviour.
Unique and distinct populations of orca, or killer whales, exist throughout the oceans. Here in the Salish Sea, the Bigg’s orca population (pictured here) is thriving due to a healthy supply of prey, i.e. marine mammals.
Unfortunately, not all orca populations around the world face the same success, such as the well-known Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW), who face a dire food shortage (Chinook salmon).
To learn more about orcas, especially ways you can help the SRKW, we recommend checking out The Centre for Whale Research website.
